Vote Suppression: How they do it
Your vote is very important. At least, it’s important that most people act on that belief. Elections frequently come down to who can get the most supporters to the polls. Similarly, by election day, the organized campaigns will know which precincts are likely to support them and which are likely to support the candidate. They will also know how new registrants are likely to vote. So if you can make the line to vote long in specific places, people are likely to give up. In the past, the lines have gotten up to 6 hours.
- Before the election, play up worries about voter fraud. Even if you’re a bit heavy handed later, you can claim you’re protecting the integrity of the election.
- Increase hurdles to registration. Insist people are not properly registered because they didn’t check a box or didn’t send a supplemental form or mailed the form to the wrong office.
- Pass strict voter-ID laws. Even if they don’t do much, they slow things down when people have trouble finding their IDs.
- Spread rumors in key areas that people may be arrested for unpaid parking tickets when they come to vote.
- Challenge voters at the poll. While most voters will survive the challenge, it can slow things down a bit. Thus there can be a long line.
- Watch as your opponents voters get frustrated after waiting for an hour and give up or have somewhere else they need to be.
